Born in Space: Unlocking Destiny (Sci-Fi Galaxy Book 1)

 Book Cover

LOVE AND BETRAYAL IN AN EMOTIONAL ROLLER-COASTER RIDE TO THE EDGE OF THE UNIVERSE.

Seven infants, conceived artificially aboard a rotating space habitat as an experiment to populate the solar system.
A fugitive mother, anointed as an alien Priestess, determined to reunite with her children.
A greedy mining boss set on conquering the planets and the loner who stands in his way

If you like strong female characters, moral dilemmas, and stories of alien encounters, then you’ll love Jeremy Clift’s rocket-fueled narrative of romance and redemption.”

Competition for control of the lucrative interstellar asteroid mining business triggers a fight for the resources of the Moon and a hunt for an ancient crystal that could be the key to unlocking the mysteries of the universe.

The battle embroils seven infants incubated in a lab as part of an experiment to breed inhabitants off-Earth for future space colonies and sparks a race against time to free their desperate mother held captive by the power-hungry head of a global mining consortium and his shady doctor.

Only the fragment of a distant solar system discovered in a captured asteroid has the lure to win her freedom and unlock the children’s destiny. When a greedy businessman, an unscrupulous scientist, and a power-mad general all covet its remarkable energy, one of the children spies an opportunity to orchestrate the reunion they've long desired.

In the tradition of Ray Bradbury, Philip K. Dick, and William Gibson, "Born in Space: Unlocking Destiny" is a thought-provoking journey into the depths of space and the human spirit. For fans of "Interstellar" and "2001: A Space Odyssey," this sci-fi gem promises an unmatched immersive experience.

Call Numbers (3 book series)

Life is a book... and every person is a chapter. Everything's looking up for Robin Walker. It's 1994 in New York City, and he's been transferred downtown to the 58th Street Branch Library. Ready to move up the ladder, Robin is excited about the opportunities that await him. But success, personal or professional, is as elusive as a first-edition rare book. Robin struggles with his strange new work environment as this motley crew of employees generates more drama than a runaway bestseller. He doesn't know who to believe - or who to let in. And as potential romance mingles with devious machinations, there's no telling where Robin's story will go. All he knows is that he must see it through to the very last page. Call Numbers is a captivating and multilayered adult drama. Through realistic dialogue and situations, author Syntell Smith has crafted a modern-day classic about the trials and tribulations of adulthood. Because a library is usually the last place you'd expect high drama, but for these characters...it's long overdue.

“Life is all about turning the page.”

Robin Walker is not used to the quiet life. As a library clerk at the 58th Street Library in Manhattan, the disruptions come from office politics. But when Robin’s grandfather, Jon Walker, is found collapsed on Robin’s living room floor, Robin must brace himself for the worst. As he reaches out to family members, he holds onto slim hope that his grandfather will somehow come through.

Robin tries to find solace in his co-workers. But when his supervisor Sonyai Yi is locked in a private battle with head librarian Augustus Chavez, loyalties are tested. He’ll soon realize its not easy knowing who to trust, especially when his job could be on the line. As the days grow long and his grandfather’s time dwindles, Robin is suddenly energized when he dates Shinju, a beautiful Asian woman he saw months ago. When Shinju becomes a part of his life, Robin tries to find joy wherever he can. But it won’t be so simple, secrets are revealed, causing a great disruption that leaves the branch shattered. When this motley crew of characters finally comes together, a sudden departure leaves the library in a different place.

Book Endings: Loss, Pain, and Revelations is an absorbing slice-of-life look at characters on interlacing paths – trying to discover themselves. In this thoughtful sequel, life is what you make of it. Like books borrowed from the library of the universe, we’re only here until we must be returned to the earth… because our time is borrowed.

In the book of life, the page must always be turned.

Robin Walker is at a crossroads. It’s 1994, and he’s been suspended from his part-time clerical position at the 58th Street Branch Library. His co-workers are overburdened, even with visiting clerks from other libraries.

Still mourning the loss of his grandfather, Robin also pines for Shinju, his former girlfriend and the niece of his supervisor Sonyai Yi. Meanwhile, library page Tonya Brown attempts to reconcile with her cheating boyfriend Andrew Friedman. Information assistant Angie Trueblood is given the cold shoulder by Heywood Learner, still despondent over a breakup. And former 58th Street page Janelle Simms is due to give birth and go on maternity leave, all while feuding with her parents.

But all is not lost. Over time, these co-workers have become much more than that. Joy, anger, love and pain are etched among them like ink on paper. Now they must decide whether to renew their life choices or reserve a new path. And with their due dates fast approaching, one thing becomes clear – everybody wants a happy ending.

Hold Circulation is the latest entry in the Call Numbers series. Author Syntell Smith crafts a layered and thought-provoking novel that examines the drama-filled lives of the people that are best known for keeping quiet. Underneath the surface, these fascinating characters try to break free of life’s burdens… by leaping off the page.

Book Cover Image

Torn between protecting family secrets and striving for freedom, a naïve teen on the verge of manhood, sent out of Cuba on the eve of the Bay of Pigs Invasion to retrieve smuggled family jewels comes of age at the height of the sexual revolution in America.

Untouched by cynicism but standing on the threshold of manhood, Julian is set on a clandestine quest to recover his family's smuggled treasures and settle his family in America. This formidable task leads him to the pulsating heart of New York City during the peak of the sexual revolution, setting the stage for a journey of self-discovery and the search for freedom. As he explores the intricate tapestry of life in this new world, he finds himself amidst a cultural awakening, experiencing the exhilaration of personal liberty and the complexities of love and identity.

In this vibrant yet tumultuous setting, he forges his path, earning his independence in a land brimming with opportunity and challenge. However, the arrival of his traditional parents, carrying the weight of their own prejudices and refusing to blend with the American mosaic, introduces a stark contrast to his newly found freedoms. The clash of cultures and generations deepens the narrative, presenting obstacles that test his resilience and determination.

Through trials and triumphs, this young man's odyssey is a reflection on the essence of freedom, the price of loyalty, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. It’s a vivid exploration of the immigrant experience, highlighting the relentless pursuit of the American Dream against the backdrop of historical and personal upheaval. This story not only charts the protagonist's physical journey from Cuba to the United States but also his emotional voyage from innocence to maturity, illuminating the profound truth that success is not always measured by what one becomes, but often by what one overcomes.

LIFE PLANS ON DIVE BAR NAPKINS

Book Cover

LIFE PLANS ON DIVE BAR NAPKINS:

THE TRAVEL STORIES

A TRAVEL WRITER COULDN’T PUBLISH

A guide for traveling recklessly and living stupidly.

A shamelessly unhinged diary of one travel writer’s adventures.

Paul Manser has seen all four corners of the world through his work. The Melbourne-based travel writer has written for newspapers and magazines in Australia; detailing sprawling landscapes and buzzing metropolises, while reviewing the often-unseen sides to some of the world's most popular destinations. However, this book isn’t about that. It’s about everything that didn’t make it into those articles.

A homage to most of his major life decisions, which started as incoherent nonsense on the back of a dive bar napkin, Paul Manser’s debut book Life Plans on Dive Bar Napkins details his wildest, wackiest, and most dangerous adventures over the years. It’s a sexy, ridiculous, and eccentric page turner that you’ll struggle to put down.

Featuring stories of being kidnapped in the most expensive taxi in Mexico, crashing dog sleds in the Arctic Circle, sharing a room with man-eating spiders in Guatemala, avoiding exploding rubbish bins in new Tokyo, and living like Frank Sinatra (with a UTI) in Palm Springs; each chapter will leave you wondering how Paul made it this far in life with all of his limbs intact and any notion of self-dignity. No matter where he was in the world, Paul managed to test the limits of his travel insurance policy while landing himself in truly astonishing situations. If being socially awkward was an extreme sport, Paul is your back-to-back X-Games champion.

The pages will see you laugh, gasp and blush while reading. The wonderfully colourful book isn’t just packed full of debauchery – no, it has plenty of stories of friendship, comradery, local kindness, perseverance, and lessons learnt. All of which have contributed to who Paul is as a writer, businessperson, father, and perennial Darwin Award contender.

Life Plans on Dive Bar Napkins is a book of experiences I always wanted to get into print, but worried that some tut-tutting travel editor would strip of all the best dick jokes. You could say that the book is an unnecessary act of self-indulgence by an egotist who shirks life’s responsibilities, drinks too much and thinks too little. And you’d probably be right,” says author Paul Manser.

He continues, ’I wrote this book for the people who want to experience something different, who drink because they enjoy it, and whose life plans begin as incoherent scrawls on the back of a dive bar napkin’.

Written for the nomad-ish wanderers of the world, and the people aspiring to be them, this book is the inspiration needed to live life to the fullest outside of societal pressures. It’s for those who like late nights that turn into early mornings, saying ‘yes’ to chaos and gaining a whole lot of life experience while you’re at it.
