Before Anyone Knows

It's Friday night and seventeen-year-old Paige Neubauer has to make a choice before Monday, when news will break that is going to ruin her life. She can stay and face the consequences from her conservative Christian parents, or she can run and be free of them for good. But a storm delays her choice and leaves her trapped in a local grocery store overnight with a classmate she hardly knows, and by the time the sun comes up, neither of their lives will ever be the same. Both girls are dealing with their own crisis, and somewhere between broom hockey, a dance party, and an ongoing debate about a pair of bagel-loving mice, they begin to confide in each other and learn that sometimes, someone you barely know can care for you in all the right ways.

Steven D. Lavine. Failure is What It's All About: A Life Devoted to Leadership in the Arts

A Life Devoted to Leadership in the Arts
by Jรถrn Jacob Rohwer

"Walt Disney's vision for an art school located before the gates of Los Angeles became a reality: Opened 50 years ago, the California Institute of the Arts had long been in crisis, before Steven D. Lavine led it to financial prosperity and international acclaim. Today, CalArts is the cradle of many Academy Award and Pulitzer Prize winners, of Mellon and Guggenheim Fellows - a hotspot of American creativity.

In personal conversations with Jรถrn Jacob Rohwer, Lavine tells his life story for the first time, talking about cultural politics, philanthropy, the avant-garde and Los Angeles at the centre of his life. Spurred on by self-doubts and a desire to learn from failure, he proves to be a sensitive thinker, visionary and transatlantic mediator between the worlds of art, politics and education."

A Chritmas to Live For

It is the holiday season in New York City. Bryan Crandon, from across the room at his best friend's annual Halloween gala, spots an unknown girl, the girl of his dreams, Kristin Greene. Over the course of the evening, he strikes up a casual conversation with her, but they leave the party without exchanging contact information. As the days pass, even though he is reluctant to enter into yet another romantic relationship, he finds it impossible to get her out of his mind.

Unbeknownst to his family and friends, Bryan struggles with issues of anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. He does not feel he has the emotional fortitude to enter into a successful relationship, regardless of how enticing the notion seems. However, with strong advice from his best friend, Andrew Cooper, he goes against his feelings and reaches out to Kristin, ultimately yielding to a budding new relationship.

With the backdrop of sparkling New York City during the Christmas season, holiday fun and festivity ensues for a young group of friends.

Bryan, a clinical psychologist, finds himself fighting to balance his faith, a new romantic interest, his career, and his struggles with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

While this story is a work of fiction, I wanted to delve into a world of disordered eating--something typically seen as a woman's issue--and weave it into a story that is told from the male perspective.

The Fox Demon's Kiss

Often times, the best way to move on is to move forward. At least that’s what Dana Jones thinks when she and her younger sister Nikki fly to Kyoto, Japan to fulfill their late mother’s wish. But as a young black college student in a new land, Dana’s skills are put to the test—and no amount of work can prepare her for what comes next.

On the day of their arrival, a mysterious man warns Dana that she will meet a monster. She dismisses him, thinking he’s a superstitious old guy who gets a kick out of scaring foreigners. But everything changes when something attacks her at the Chihoshi Inn.

Sorahiko, the inn’s co-owner and the handsomest man Dana has ever laid eyes on, saves her. He explains that the monster she encountered is a demon that belongs to a clan of demons with a sinister mission. They go after humans with a sacred heart—something Dana seems to have, and more valuable than she can fathom. To make matters worse, she’s their next target.

Going back home to New York seems like the best course of action—only the demons have other plans. Sorahiko offers Dana his protection, but at a heavy price. Will Dana pay that price to save herself and her family, or will she risk it all by facing the ferocious beasts who will stop at nothing to devour her?
