Manifestations of Apprehension: A Memoir

Manifestations of Apprehension: A Memoir

Manifestations of Apprehension, a phrase that haunted Cimino, describes his journey through challenges in his military career and the powerful message of turning setbacks into opportunities for growth. Cimino emphasizes that underachievements can be the seeds of opportunity and catalysts to achieving better results. It offers a unique view on failure and showcases resilience and determination to convert adversity into positive outcomes, offering an inspiring narrative that resonates with readers. Ironically, the scar of this phrase became the key driver that enabled him to convert his "failure" into positive outcomes, each time gaining confidence and notable achievements.
After a troubling and depressing military career start, Cimino maximized the support from others, and his determination to change his course enabled him to navigate each subsequent assignment with greater success. The story takes the reader through Cimino’s various military assignments with a comprehensive view of his experiences, creating an engaging storyline that spans through aircrew training, operations in tactical reconnaissance, as an Air Force Navigator Instructor, working with the Canadian Forces, focusing on space-related programs in the Headquarters Air Staff at the Pentagon, and with the Intelligence Community, where he managed the exploitation of products from some of the country’s most sophisticated satellites. Cimino’s assignments describe a path of devotion to mission and accomplishments.
The emotional range of the memoir includes many stories - some funny, some heartwarming, and those containing poignant moments during his military service, allowing the reader to connect with the human element of Cimino’s story. The Special Tributes section highlights his deep appreciation, respect, and honor for friends and family who have served in the military, made immense sacrifices, and are gone but not forgotten.

William A. Cimino is a native of Brooklyn who attended an all-boys high school and graduated from St. John’s University in Jamaica, NY, with a degree in Mathematics and a minor in Physics. He served in the U.S. Air Force for nearly twenty-six years, beginning in the late 1960s during the War in Vietnam. During duty to his country, he and his wife, Fran, relocated numerous times across the states and overseas as they raised a family. The characteristics of military life helped to develop the values and behavior they have instilled in their three children and six grandchildren – rules to apply in life. After his military service, he worked for nearly thirty years as a manager and executive in the Information Technology and Defense industries. Cimino and his wife are residents of northern Virginia.
