His debut novel concerns a future thousands of years after a mysterious apocalyptic event where kings and queens of Europe once again reign supreme. For the fantasy lovers it has courtly intrigue, powerful religions, and valiant battles. For the science fiction lovers it has wondrous technology like plasma swords, motorcycle mounted knights, and a host of devices such as tentoriums, demensios, bardnets, and ocuteks. History lovers will enjoy the warped dimensions and references to medieval Europe, now called Yuropa.
The novel focuses on the journey and rise to power of Ducaine de Bordeaux, a vassal in the kingdom of Lothair. The story begins with his coronation as the Count of Burjean, following the death of his hated father. He wins over rivals with his sharp instincts and oratory skill, and when that is not successful he marches to war. He marries into a powerful family and is mentored by their patriarch. He comes into his own as a lord and is eventually appointed to the king’s council, using his skill in intrigue to win causes close to the king’s heart.
With his successes needing to continue, Ducaine begins to take a darker path. He betrays a vassal close to him in his never-ending conquest for more. He finds out the true price of his actions when his wife is killed by fearsome barbarians hired by his enemies. Yet even this does not curb his ambitions.
Ducaine begins terror campaigns in Ital, using shadowy agents to manipulate the courts of that land, causing riots and bloodshed. He engages in a fierce war with an Italian count, one that he eventually wins at great cost. He strikes alliances elsewhere, including one with the technology-obsessed lands of the Cog Isles and their experimental war machines.
When his closest friend and spymaster is killed by an Italian Duke, he disobeys his king and burns the Duke’s city to the ground. The consequences are severe, he finds his lands and his status greatly reduced. The story ends with his son and heir finding his cold body with a scrawled note clutched in his skeletal hands. It is addressed to his son, and his final wish is revealed. “You must wear a crown.”
