Prince Selenie of Slovendi is crushed to learn he may have to grow up much sooner than anticipated as his father, King Q'aerodel was slain in battle. He feels a sense of duty and also as though his chance to explore the world was snatched away from him. King Vaerion, a family friend and neighboring king, aids him in his pain and his journey to become king by sending him on a quest to enemy territories to re-establish treaties.
